How to Market Your Novel/Work of Fiction

A guide for authors of fiction, from novels to historical fiction, on how to identify, engage and build communities of readers.

You finally finished that novel, published, and are ready to enter the next stage — marketing. Unlike writing your book, which requires spending hours alone in your own head, marketing is all about connecting to others. Make no mistake, marketing your book is necessary for getting your work out there and read by the masses. If the thought of selling your work to people sounds overwhelming, don’t fret.
Here, we’ll discuss the most effective marketing strategies for your novel.

  1. Know your genre.

Not all fiction is created equal. The top five most lucrative fiction genres are horror, sci-fi & fantasy, religious & spiritual, crime, and romance. While this information doesn’t mean that you should start writing high fantasy if you’re a literary fiction novelist, it is important to know what’s marketable for your genre. Spend time each week researching the top selling books in your genre. Read reviews, research the authors, and listen to any interviews that might be available. Most importantly, read. You can’t expect to write a great crime drama if you don’t understand what makes a crime drama great.

  1. Get a professional book cover design.

While the old adage “don’t judge a book by its cover” works as a metaphor, in practice, your book cover matters. Take for example, the formula for romance covers that tips readers off to the book’s contents. After all, the cover is the first thing that your readers are going to see when they pick up your book. Think of your fiction cover as the window to the world you created. Unless you’re a graphic artist, it’s probably a good idea to leave your cover to a professional.

  1. Take advantage of the world wide web.

If you don’t already have an author website, make one. Every author needs an author website. All of your favorite authors have one. Nobel Prize winning author Alice Munro, and fantasy author/ character-killer George R.R. Martin are just a couple of examples. Publication Consultants’ author contracts include creating a website, blog, and web presence details.

In addition to a website, posting to social media, creating an email list, and posting event pages are great ways to attract readers. We call this building your platform or brand.

  1. Ask a professional to help.

Publication Consultants has been helping authors market their books for almost forty years. Not only can Publication Consultants do as much (or as little) marketing work as you need. We can assist with everything from creating your website, to helping with your release party and providing opportunities for book signings.
